Taxation

  1. EXCISE TAX
  2. Excise Tax is a form of indirect tax levied on specific goods. In U.A.E. ,these goods are typically those that are harmful to human health or the environment. The introduction of excise tax is to reduce consumption of these commodities while also raising revenues for the government that can be spent on beneficial public services.

In the UAE, Excise Tax will apply to the following goods and the relevant rates are-

    Tobacco products - 100%

Carbonated drinks ( this excludes sparkling water) - 50%

    Energy drinks - 100%

End consumers of these products need to pay a higher retail price for purchasing these products due to excise duty at higher rates. All businesses that import, produce or store excisable goods must consider if they must be registered with the Federal Tax Authority and are accountable for paying excise tax and filing return.

Excise tax is the responsibility of any person engaged in:

    1. The import of excise goods into the UAE
    2. The production of excise goods where they are released for consumption in the UAE
    3. The stockpiling of excise goods in the UAE in certain cases
    4. Anyone who is responsible for overseeing an excise warehouse or designated zone i.e. a warehouse keeper

There is no registration threshold for excise tax, therefore any person who has the intention to be involved in any of the activities listed above must register prior to the date of introduction and account for excise tax.
